Learning outcomes • Understand the importance of language policies;
• Identify the international dimension of the Portuguese language;
• Characterize language policies in different Portuguese-speaking countries.

Syllabus 1. Portuguese: a pluricentric language.
2. Language policy and language planning.
3. Language policy and teaching Portuguese abroad.
4. Portuguese language policies within the context of European, Brazilian, and African language policies. The role of the CPLP in the dissemination of Portuguese.
5. Portuguese: an international language and a language of science

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Work dedicated to the 5th point of the program

Oral presentation and discussion (30 minutes) on May 19th and 26th – 12 points
Objectives: 1) to problematize the Portuguese language as an international language or as a language of science; 2) to identify practices of adoption and implementation of the language as an international language or as a language of science; and 3) to critically analyse the sustainability of Portuguese as an international language or as a language of science.

Written work (essay up to 8 pages) – 8 points (submission by email: arsac@ubi.pt, until June 9th).

Note 1: Occurrences of copying, plagiarism, use of AI tools and text production or any other form of fraud will be penalized with the annulment of the assessment task in which the practice is detected and result in non-admission to the exam (in all cases).
Note 2: Non-attendance at any of the assessment tasks may only be justified by presenting a valid document such as, for example, a health declaration,
