Learning outcomes |
The curricular unit aims to provide students with skills to use Geographic Information Systems in the spatial analysis of vector network systems. The following skills are transmitted to students: (a) introduction to Geographic Information Science with the main foundations, history, and national and international uses of tools (b) information about spatial data and their nature, models, database (c) GIS structures and functionality.

Geographic information and spatial data 2.1 Nature and properties of geographical phenomena 2.2 Models for representing the real world 2.3 Geographical databases (GDB) 2.4 Types of spatial analyses and operations 2.5 Most commonly used national and international geodetic systems. 2.6 GIS information metadata and the Inspire Directive. 3. GIS functionalities and spatial data analysis 3.1 GIS structure and functionalities 3.2 Matrix and vector data 3.3 Qualitative and quantitative data 3.4 Information acquisition, editing and integration 3.5 Analysing processes in vector and matrix data 3.6 Surveying and spatial overlay 3.7 Properties, limitations and application of visual variables 3.8 Rules for building and preparing thematic maps in GIS.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
This curricular unit is taught during the 1st academic semester, involving 30 hours of contact with the teacher, 170 hours of independent student work and 10 hours for assessment (total: 210 hours). Approval of this curricular unit grants the trainee 7.5 ECTS.
