Learning outcomes The general objectives of this curricular unit are the following: 1) Provide students with multimedia skills, in order to develop in students a critical and creative awareness of computing. 2) Provide students with basic skills/abilities in signal processing techniques in multimedia devices/systems. Regarding the specific objectives, students should be able to: 1) explain how analog signals can be reasonably represented by discrete samples; 2) realize the trade-off between sampling frequency, quantization levels and file size. 3) describe the trade-offs between storing information versus storing enough information to reproduce the information; 4) describe the differences between lossy and lossless image compression techniques; 5) identify what are the basic algorithms that perform simple signal processing to remove noise, emphasize important features, etc.
Syllabus 1) Digital Signals: sampling, quantizing, and coding. 2) Sound, hearing, and music: sound and the ear; frequency, pitch, and harmony; digital audio formats and compression. 3) Visual perception: cones, rods, and the eye; color vision; color spaces and profiles; image formats and compression. 4) Animation: approaches to animation; perception in video and film; making animations; visualization. 5) Intensity transformations and spatial filtering. 6) Frequency domain processing: the Fourier representation; filtering in frequency domain. 7) Systems: linearity and time-invariance; impulse responses and convolution; spectral analysis; convolution. 8) Audio and image filtering: EQ; filter design; subtractive synthesis; echo and reverberation; resampling; two-dimensional convolution and image effects.
