Learning outcomes |
The general objectives of this curricular unit are the following:
1) Provide students with multimedia skills, in order to develop in students a critical and creative awareness of computing.
2) Provide students with basic skills/abilities in signal processing techniques in multimedia devices/systems.
Regarding the specific objectives, students should be able to:
1) explain how analog signals can be reasonably represented by discrete samples;
2) realize the trade-off between sampling frequency, quantization levels and file size.
3) describe the trade-offs between storing information versus storing enough information to reproduce the information;
4) describe the differences between lossy and lossless image compression techniques;
5) identify what are the basic algorithms that perform simple signal processing to remove noise, emphasize important features, etc.
