Learning outcomes The general objectives of this curricular unit are the following: 1) provide students with a comprehensive view of creative robotics as an integrative discipline of art, computing and engineering; 2) provide students with competences/skills to design, build and program autonomous systems capable of telling stories and interacting with humans. With regard to the specific objectives of this course, after completing the course, students should be able to: 1) formulate a narrative goal as an interaction of a robot with objects; 2) apply basic position and orientation control techniques; 3) build a powered machine/robot with articulated structures; 4) program robots through control and algorithms to create the illusion of life; 5) simulate multi-robot systems: 6) use robotic behavior as an artistic medium; 7) collaborate with teams of artists, designers, engineers and computer scientists to create creative performance technology.
Syllabus 1) Contextual exploration, introduction to simulation. 2) Kinematics, dynamics, and feedback control. 3) Miniature machine design and fabrication tests. 4) Performance improvisation and storyboarding, proof-of-concept testing. 5) Script iteration, project design, fabrication, and assembly. 6) Full system integration, testing, design iteration. 7) Acting performance and choreography. 8) Documentation, analysis, review and critique.
