Learning outcomes The course on systematic reviews and introduction to meta-analysis aims to provide students with the tools to conduct systematic reviews. By the end of the course, students should be able to:
• Formulate a research question structured according to the PICO criteria.
• Develop a systematic review protocol in accordance with the PRISMA Guidelines and the methodological principles of the Cochrane Collaboration.
• Conduct advanced searches in biomedical databases.
• Apply eligibility criteria for the selection of primary studies.
• Critically appraise the methodological quality of studies and assess the risk of bias.
• Extract data systematically and in a structured manner.
• Understand the fundamentals of meta-analysis and interpret its results.
• Write a scientific systematic review article.
• Work collaboratively within a research team, respecting the different roles in the process.
Syllabus • Introduction to systematic literature reviews — the Cochrane process. Formulating the research question, eligibility criteria, protocol development, and PRISMA guidelines.
• Techniques for searching biomedical databases — overview and search strategies: databases, creating search strings, controlled vocabulary, and Boolean operators.
• Study selection — Defining PICO/PECO criteria; Data search strategy; Steps and tools in study selection; Challenges in study selection.
• Study analysis: quality and risk of publication bias — Assessment of methodological rigor, publication bias, and evaluation tools.
• Data extraction: development and use of standardized forms. Items to consider; Collection process; Difficulties during data extraction.
• Introduction to Meta-analysis.
• Writing the article and concluding the authors — structure, PRISMA guidelines, GRADE, and the submission process.
