- Recognize the path of the Latin language to the Portuguese; - Read the Latin text according to the restored pronunciation; - Apply the concepts of Latin grammar, such as declensions and conjugations, in adapted texts; - Accurately translate Latin texts; - Connect customs and rituals of Roman society to the current society. - Recognize the major literary trends and authors of Latin literature.

Syllabus |
1.The formation of Portuguese: from Latin to Romance languages; main phonetic phenomena in the transition from Latin to Portuguese. 1.2. Words and Latin expressions in current use. 1.3. Lexical influences from Latin in Portuguese and Spanish. 2. Latin pronunciation and its effects on the accentuation of the Portuguese language. 3. Reading, grammatical commentary and translation of adapted texts. 4. Morphology: declension of nouns, adjectives and pronouns; verbal inflection in indicative, imperative and infinitive. Reflections on the morphology of Portuguese. 5. Syntax: coordination and subordination (with indicative), Latin cases and syntactic functions, prepositions and their regencies. Latin influences on the sentence structure of the Portuguese. 6. Culture. 6.1. The Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula. 6.2. Roman religion, mythology, society and games. 6.3. Major literary trends and authors of Latin literature.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
The methodologies used are subject to exposure and content application classes, using New Technologies, whenever appropriate; by discussion and reflection on texts; and individual work. The students will be evaluated periodically in two moments of the semester, through the accomplishment of two written tests, and of continuous form by their participation during the classes.
