Learning outcomes - To know the distinction between phonetics and phonology;
- To characterize sound as a physical phenomenon;
- To know the different types of phonemes and allophones in Portuguese;
- To carry out phonetic and phonological transcriptions using the International Phonetic Alphabet;
- To identify phonological oppositions and relationships between words.
Syllabus - Introduction:
a) Distinction between phonetics and phonology;
b) Sound and its physical properties;
c) the vocal tract.
- Phonetics:
a) Classification of sounds;
b) Phonetic transcription;
- Phonology:
a) Phonemes and allophones;
b) Distinctive features;
c) The Portuguese phonological system.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The methodologies used in the classroom involve lectures and application of content, discussion and reflection on phonetic and phonological problems, and individual assignments.

Students will be assessed at the end of the semester through a written exam, and continuously through their participation and completion of tasks during classes.

The assessment of the Portuguese Phonetics and Phonology course will be carried out, as agreed between the Teacher and the Students, after contact at the beginning of the semester, in the following ways:
2. Completion of 3 practical tasks - class questions (20%);
3. An assessment test (80%).

Minimum conditions required for taking the exam (regular and resit periods) are 75% attendance and a minimum grade of 6 in teaching and learning.

Students covered by exceptional circumstances registered at enrollment are exempt from the attendance requirement for taking exams (regular and resit periods).
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
