Learning outcomes In the end of the semester the student must be capable of:
1. Relate the historical context with the Portuguese literary production of the seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth centuries;
2. Distinguish and characterize Mannerism, Baroque and Neoclassicism;
3. Recognize the aesthetic and thematic trends of the major literary figures of the Portuguese Baroque and Neoclassicism;
4. Analyze with critical sense relevant literary texts of the Portuguese Baroque and Neoclassicism.
Syllabus 1. Historical context of the Portuguese baroque literature.
2. Mannerism and Baroque: distinction and Portuguese baroque leading figures in lyrism, narrative and dramaturgie.
2.1. «Corte na Aldeia», of Francisco Rodrigues Lobo: contextual analysis of dedication, “Dialogue I” and an excerpt from the “Dialogue XII” (civility and courtesy
concepts).
2..2. The Portuguese baroque poetry. Feminin conventual poetry. Analysis of poems.
2.3. The Portuguese baroque oratory: characterization and leading figures.
2.3.1. Antonio Vieira: facets of the “Emperor of the Portuguese language”.
2.3.2. The sermons of Vieira in the context of the baroque oratory and moralistic literature. Analysis of the “Sermão da Sexagésima”.
2.4. «Apólogos Dialogais», of Francisco Manuel de Melo. Analysis of “Os relógios falantes”.
3. Neoclassicism: contextualization, characterization and leading figures.
3.1. Bocage between Neoclassicism and Pre-Romanticism. Analysis of selected sonnets.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This course unit will include a theoretical component, delivered through lectures and the promotion of debates on the proposed topics, as well as a practical component, consisting of exercises analyzing literary and visual objects. Assessment will be based on the production of a scientific article along with its presentation (60% + 20% of the final grade), which should reflect the intertextuality between a literary work of the student’s choice and one or more visual objects. Attendance and critical participation in class will also be assessed (20% of the final grade), with a minimum attendance requirement of 80% of the sessions.
