Learning outcomes 1. Distinguish the concepts of modernity and modernism;
2. Develop critical thinking in relation to the literary institution;
3. Characterize the literary trends embraced by modernity and by Portuguese modernism;
4. Identify the main writers and aggregators magazines of Portuguese modernism;
5. Analyze relevant literary texts of the Portuguese modernity and modernism.
Syllabus 1. Modernity: concept and problematisation of the distinction 'classic' and 'modern'.
2. Cesario Verde's poetry: modernity marks and ideological coordinates. Analysis of poems.
3. Portuguese symbolism: characterization; sources; leading figures and texts; importance of symbolism in the Portuguese literary scene;
3.1. Relief of the Raul Brandão’s novel to the modern Portuguese narrative. Selected excerpts analysis of the «Os Pobres».
3.2. The poetry of Pessanha: «Clepsidra». Structure of the work. Title’s symbology. Analysis of poems. Importance to the Orphic movement.
4. First Portuguese Modernism: continuities and rupture in relation to Symbolism. Periodization and aesthetic-ideological characterization. «Orpheus»: tutelary
figures and -isms sustained.
4.1. Pessoa orthonymous and heteronym. Analysis of poems.
5. Second Portuguese Modernism: the generation of «Presença». Periodization and aesthetic and ideological trends. Authors of reference.
5.1. Régio's poetry. Analysis of poems.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment criteria were discussed and establised in the firt class of the semester:

- First test: 31th October (8 values);
- Second test: 12th December (8 values);
The syllabus of the first test is not repeated in the second test. In the exams, of course, all syllabus can be subejct of evaluation. All this is explained to stiudents inthe first class of the semester.
attendance and pertinent participation in classes along the semester: 2 values maximum
Lecture and oral presentation of a text of the Modern Portuguese Literature: 2 values. 25th November.
The acess to exams is only possible with 6 values mimimum along the semester.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
