Learning outcomes |
General goals: To be acquainted with some of the literary productions canonised by the traditional historiography, which are therefore considered to be central to the studied frame time (17th and 18th c.), continuing the historical approach already begun. Learning outcomes: -To use and define basic concepts for literary studies in general, and for that frame time in particular; -To recognise and describe literary trends of the period; -To identify, understand and discuss literary fragments, representative of the time, taking into account its context of production; -To prove maturity, accurateness and ability to develop and express personal (not subjective) ideas; -To use honestly and appropriately others’ thoughts; -To relate, from an interdisciplinary point of view, other acquired knowledge or skills.

I. From the Renaissance to the Baroque. The “golden siglo” or the “conflicting age” > 1. The narrative genre in the s. XVII. Miguel de Cervantes and the modern novel. 'Don Quijote de la Mancha'. Cervantes beyond 'Quijote' and 'Quijote' beyond Cervantes. The picaresque. The prose “of ideas” | 2. Baroque poetry. The duel between conceptism and culteranism. Quevedo and Góngora | 3. The golden theater. Dramatic production in Spanish after 'Arte nuevo'. Two 'monsters of nature': Lope and Calderón. II. From illustration to Romanism. Lights and shadows of the Spanish Enlightenment. The two Spains. Exile and peninsular romanticism > 4. The literature of the 18th century and its amalgamation of currents. Pre-romanticism. Cadalso, ‘Noches lúgubres’ (the “1st European romantic work”) and ‘Cartas marruecas’.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
Teaching Methodologies: Lectures, using audiovisual materials and permanent teacher-student interaction; practical classes, discussion/sharing of readings carried out individually and commenting on texts. Student’s assessment: Seminars/text analysis throughout the semester: 40% of the final classification; final written test: 60% of the final classification.
