Learning outcomes By the end of the semester the student must be capable of:
– Develop critical thinking in relation to literary phenomenon;
– Consolidate the terminology of versification, narratology and rhetorics;
– Understand literary trends after the Second Portuguese Modernism to the present day;
– Recognize the main writers and poets of those trends;
– Increase the capacity and critical analysis of poetry and prose;
– Increase the study of literary idiosyncrasies of the greatest contemporary Portuguese writers.
Syllabus 1. The Beginning of Portuguese literary contemporaneity: problematization.
2. Torga's dissidence regarding "presença". Analysis of "A festa" in "Novos Contos da Montanha".
3. The Portuguese neorealist and surrealist movements: chronology, aesthetic-ideological primacy and leading figures.
3.1. Ferreira de Castro: "A Lã e a Neve" as a work of denunciation and commitment.
3.2. Herberto Helder: analysis of the short story "Teorema" in "Os Passos em Volta".
3. Coeval poetic tendencies and successors to "Cadernos de Poesia". Difficulty in establishing a contemporary poetic Portuguese canon.
3.1. Sophia de Mello Breyner. Analysis of selected poems.
4. New paths of Portuguese novelistic fiction from the second half of the 20th century: novelistic trends and most representative authors.
4.1. Vergílio Ferreira's novel-problem: "Em Nome da Terra".
4.2. The post-modern historical novel: "A Sala das Perguntas", by Fernando Campos.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical-pratic lessons.
2 tests (8 values each), oral presentation (2) and evaluation of the partcipation in classes along the semester (2 values maximum).
Lecture and oral presentation of a poem or a little excert of a narrative (maximum une page) by an author of pOrtuguese contemporary litterature rthat was nor given in classes – 2 valores – 2 de Maio – only oral presentation.
The evaluation criteria are presented and discussed in the first lesson.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
