Learning outcomes |
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - Understand the fundamentals of the history of raw earth construction. - Understand the diversity of construction processes used in raw earth construction. - Understand the main methods of analysis, classification, physical and/or chemical stabilization, granulometric correction and soil preparation. - Explore methods of soil stabilization and correction. - Understand the equipment and tools for raw earth construction. - Explore aesthetic characteristics with natural pigment coloring. - Develop, as a team, the preliminary phase of a simple project for a raw earth construction.

1. Introduction to Raw Earth Construction: • History and evolution. • Ecological benefits and sustainability. • Case studies in Portugal and worldwide. 2. Soil Characteristics and Preparation: • Soil analysis: granulometry, plasticity and composition. • Preparation techniques: excavation, drying and screening. • Correction and stabilization methods: cement, lime and bitumen. • Pigmentation techniques. 3. Construction Techniques in Rammed Earth: • Manual and mechanical compaction. • Molds and formwork. • Practical construction procedures. 4. Preparation of the Final Project: • Development of a practical project. • Application of the knowledge acquired.
