Learning outcomes |
1. To learn the main features of a natural mineral water – following knowledge acquired in the Introduction to Medical Hydrology – to furtyher analyse their therapeutic interest in various clinical situations. 2. To discuss the scientific reasons and practices of those therapeutic indications. 3. To discuss and present the main application of the various thermal techniques in relation to the respective therapeutic indications. 4. To take into account techniques that complement the thermal techniques namely those included in the general therapeutic approaches of crenotherapy, also including thalassotherapy, a climatotherapy, etc.

Syllabus |
Water-based treatments: thermal cure, crenotherapy, hydrotherapy and thalassotherapy. Thermalism and well-being tourism. Mineral waters: legal denomination. Gases (carbonic gas, nitrogen and some radioactivity), muds. Portuguese Thermal Spas. Allocation of therapeutic indications to thermal Spas. Duration of the thermal cure. Thermalists. Who prescribes “going to Spas” in Portugal. Thermal Spa techniques. Functional re-education. Complementary techniques at a Thermal Spa. Good Thermal Practices: their implementation, and control in the Spa. Therapeutic activity of thermalism in various diseases (reumatic and muscle-skeletal, of the airways and ENT; of the digestive system; metabolic and endocrine; cardiovascular; of the urinary tract; dermatological. New applications of hydrological therapies (gynecology; mental health; medical oncology; oral health.
