Year 1
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload OT(6H)/T(4H)/TP(20H)
Scientific area Environmental Sciences
Entry requirements Good knowledge and application of GIS tools.
Learning outcomes Objectives: to analyse the main environmental impacts associated with engineering works and the effect of policies, plans and programmes on the environment; and to propose measures to minimise potential negative effects on the environment using geographic information system (GIS) tools.

Skills:
a) Recognition of the environmental consequences arising from the construction, operation and decommissioning of engineering works;
b) Understanding of the different stages of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process and the application of strategic environmental assessment (SEA);
c) Understanding of the potential of GIS tools for environmental impact assessment, environmental monitoring and strategic environmental assessment.
Syllabus 1. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Environmental problems arising from the implementation of works, policies, plans and programmes. Environmental sustainability indicators. Use of GIS in environmental management.

2. APPLICATION OF GIS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA). Concepts, methods, good practices and techniques associated with EIA and SEA. Usefulness of GIS in environmental assessment.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL MODELLING WITH GIS
Acquisition and structuring of environmental data in GIS. Spatial analysis for environmental problems. Visualisation and communication of environmental results.
