Learning outcomes This course unit aims to initiate the research work with the definition of the Thesis Project, which will include the topic, framework, justification, objectives, literature review, work plan, schedule, and supervision team. It will be presented and defended publicly at the end of the 1st semester. The goal is to equip students with the skills to develop autonomous and high-quality research, focusing on sustainable and resilient solutions to the environmental and digital challenges facing cities and territories.
1st Semester: Identify scientific problems; map partners; conduct a critical literature review; formulate hypotheses and objectives; prepare, present, and publicly defend the Thesis Project.
2nd Semester: Apply research methods in the field and/or laboratory; analyse preliminary results; draft articles for publication and papers for presentation at events; manage time, resources, and the work programme.
Syllabus 1) Definition of the topic, supervision team, and development of the Thesis Project. The topics will be in the area of urban sustainability with solutions or development of materials, technologies, or software for service management, taking into account the SDGs, the digitalisation of cities, communities and territories, adaptation to climate change, and the ecological transition.

2) Expected results: A structured Thesis Project, presented, discussed, and approved; literature review completed or at an advanced stage; obtaining some results and their publication or presentation/communication.
Main Bibliography The bibliography for this course unit depends on the specific research topic. It essentially includes a combination of scientific journal articles, books, and works published or presented at technical and scientific events, which will be obtained from bibliographic databases or provided by the supervisors so that students acquire the knowledge for the development of the Doctoral Thesis.

Students will have access to bibliographic databases and digital research means available in the UBI libraries, to obtain bibliography relevant to their research topic.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment for this course unit is qualitative and based on the report of the scientific supervisor, who will recommend the accreditation, or not, of 60 ECTS. It also based in the presentation, discussion and classification of the Thesis Project (Approved", "Approved subject to modifications", or "Not approved").
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
