Learning outcomes |
1. Demonstrate knowledge that expresses a multicultural vision of the literary phenomenon, exceeding the criterion of national borders, as well as allowing relating literature to other arts, either in the past or in contemporary times. 2. Reveal a new and more open way of understanding the dynamics of Portuguese and Spanish literary systems. 3. To be able to carry out short research works, one of them being a little longer, in which the ability to identify, describe and explain cases of literary relation or interarts is revealed. The theoretical component of the classes is particularly reflected in objectives 1 and 2, while the practical dimension of the work carried out is more closely related to the third objective of the course unit.

1. Origins of the comparative project: Enlightenment and Romanticism. 2. Comparative literature and national literatures. 3. The literary canon. 4. Comparatist methodologies. 5. Profiles of an European literature: a) Main authors; b) Relations between literary systems; c) The role of non-European literatures. 6. Portuguese literature in the framework of the Iberian system and the Western historical adventure. 7. From comparative literature to inter-arts studies. a) Literature and Fine Arts: - how to "read" a painting; - examples of relations between literature and the "beaux arts"; b) Literature and cinema: - how to analyse a movie; - examples of relations between literature and cinema.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
This course unit will include a theoretical component, delivered through lectures and the promotion of debates on the proposed topics, as well as a practical component, consisting of exercises analyzing literary and visual objects. Assessment will be based on the production of a scientific article along with its presentation (60% + 20% of the final grade), which should reflect the intertextuality between a literary work of the student’s choice and one or more visual objects. Attendance and critical participation in class will also be assessed (20% of the final grade), with a minimum attendance requirement of 80% of the sessions.
