Learning outcomes |
- To acquire scientific and technological knowledge of materials characterisation techniques.
- To understand the most suitable destructive and non-destructive characterisation techniques for characterising materials and their applicability in an industrial context.
-To recognise the chemical, microstructural, physical and mechanical characteristics of different materials, understanding their applications in an industrial context and the relevance of using heat treatments.

Syllabus |
1. Destructive testing and non-destructive testing. Sample preparation techniques.
2. Powder characterisation. Particle size and shape distribution. Specific surface area. Surface electric charge (zeta potential).
3. Surface analysis techniques. Roughness. Optical and metallographic microscopy. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM, SEM-EDS). Atomic force microscopy (AFM). Transmission microscopy (TEM). Penetrant liquids. Induced currents.
4. Microstructural analysis. X-ray diffraction and fluorescence (XRD, XRF). Spectroscopy (XPS, Raman). Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). CScan. X-ray microtomography.
5. Thermal analysis techniques. Thermogravimetry, differential calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, dilatometry and dynamic thermomechanical analysis.
6. Electromechanical analysis. Piezoelectricity. Piezoresistivity.
