Vibrations Modelling and Analysis

Code 18165
Year 1
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload TP(60H)
Scientific area Engenharia Mecânica
Entry requirements N.A.
Learning outcomes -To acquire basic knowledge about the physical phenomenon of mechanical vibrations; -To apply mathematical models to describe the oscillatory motion of mechanical systems (discrete and continuous); -To gain knowledge in using numerical computation programs (Matlab or similar) and commercial finite element packages to solve problems involving mechanical vibrations; -To develop synthesis and critical analysis skills that enable the assessment of mechanical vibration effects in more complex problems, considering practical scenarios.
Syllabus 1-Concepts of Vibrations and Noise: System discretization and degrees of freedom; Elements of a vibratory system; Equations of motion; Virtual work principle; Newtonian versus energetic approach; Introduction to noise; 2-Single-degree-of-freedom Linear Systems: Free vibration (damped and undamped); Response to harmonic excitation; Resonance; 3-Multidegree-of-freedom Linear Systems: Equations of motion; Undamped free vibration; Response to external applied load; General case; 4-Dynamics of Continuous Elastic Bodies: Transverse vibrations of strings; Axial vibrations of bars; Torsional vibrations of shafts; Slender beams and rectangular plates under bending; 5-The Finite Element Method: Free vibrations of Bars, Slender beams and Plates.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The curricular unit is structured in two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part. In the first part, the topics are lectured with the support of multimedia slides. Additional information is written on the board and exercises are solved. In the second part, computer codes are developed to solve more realistic and complex problems. Evaluation is continuous and carried out in two stages: (i) a written test (TE); and (ii) a set of assignments (TP), evaluating different aspects of the competencies acquired by the students. The learning process classification is NFA=0.6xTE+0.4xTP. Approval occurs when, cumulatively, NFA>=10, TE>=6, and TP>=8. The condition for exam access is TE>=6 and TP>=8. The exam evaluation is based on a written test (NE) and the assignments carried out during the semester (the assignments are only done once). The exam classification is NFE=0.6xNE+0.4xTP.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
