Learning outcomes |
In this Course Unit is intended that the student prepare a scientific dissertation in partial fulfilment of the requirements to obtain the master's degree in Civil Engineering. At the end of the Course Unit the student should be able to: 1) acquire knowledge and ability to understand and solve problems in a branch of the study cycle, in the context of research or innovation; 2) integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, make informed decisions, develop solutions or make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the ethical and social implications and responsibilities that result from those solutions and those judgments; 3) communicate their conclusions and the underlying knowledge and arguments to different audiences, in a clear and unambiguous way.

Syllabus |
The theme of the dissertation of each student will be chosen on the basis of proposals made available by the supervisors. The approved dissertation plan defines the objectives, the tasks and the work plan for the whole semester. It is the responsibility of the supervisor(s) to coordinate the development of the works, supervising the following phases: a) execution of the work plan approved, with periodic discussion of the work developed. b) writing and discussion of the first draft of the final document.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
The evaluation is carried out on the basis of appreciation and public discussion of the first draft of the dissertation, by a jury composed of 3 to 5 members, according to the provisions of Article 22 of Decree-Law no. 74/2006, dated March 24, replaced by Decree-Law no. 63/2016 of 13 September. The final grade is calculated as an arithmetic average of the individual grades awarded by each member of the jury in the following assessment components: A - Scientific and technical quality of the dissertation (60%) B - Quality of the public presentation (20%) C - Quality of the public examination (20%)
