Learning outcomes Offering under-graduate students a wide-ranging approach of a historical point of view to the problems which have been the central core of metaphysical speculation. At the same time it intends to promote the study and analysis of contemporary texts regarding the central themes of the subject. By the end of this Curriculum Unit, the students must be able to critically move in the history of metaphysical speculation between the Pre-Socratics and Quine. By the end of the course the students will have the ability to analyze, reflect upon and voice out their properly structured opinion about texts and themes regarding the contemporary research in the area of analytical Metaphysics.
Syllabus
A. Theoretical classes: theory and history of Metaphysics.

1.1. Physics, Metaphysics and Theology: the emergence of the discipline via Aristotle;
1.2. Metaphysics and Religion: archaic thought, pre-Socratics, Plato and medieval thought;
1.3. Metaphysics and Phenomenology: Kant, Hegel and Heidegger;
1.4. Metaphysics, Ethics and Politics: from Pre-Socratics to John Rawls.

2. Introduction to contemporary analytical Metaphysics:
2.1. Main concepts, methodology and problematic context.

B. Practical workshops.

3. The fundamental problems of Metaphysics:
3.1. Existence: Quine, Carnap and Russell.
3.2. Identity: Kripke.
3.3. Universals, proprieties and kinds: Quine, David Lewis and Putnam.
3.4. Causality: Mackie, Donald Davidson and David Lewis.
3.5. Physicalism: Geoffreu and Frank Thompson.
3.6. Realism and anti-realism: Dummett and Crispin Wright.
Main Bibliography The theoretical facet of this course will essentially consist in a wide-ranging study of miscellaneous bibliography directly suggested during classes; practical workshops will specially focus awareness on the texts included in the works:
