Learning outcomes The main objectives of this course unit are the study of the constructional features, operating principles and main applications of three-phase synchronous and asynchronous electric drives.
At the end of this course unit the student should be able to select and use three-phase synchronous and asynchronous electric drives.
Syllabus Asynchronous machines: Introduction.
Constructional features.
Windings.
Rotating magnetic field.
Induced voltages.
Polyphase induction machines.
Equivalent circuit model: no-load and blocked-rotor tests.
Performance characteristics.

Synchronous machines: Introduction.
Constructional features.
Synchronous generators: The inifine bus.
Synchronous motors.
Equivalent circuit model: determination of the synchronous reactance Xs.
Phasor diagram.
Power and torque characteristics.
