Learning outcomes |
With this course unit is intended that students critically discuss the concepts related to education for citizenship and acquire major methodological tools necessary for its implementation.
At the end of this course unit, students should be able to: - Explain the various traditions that merge in the current concept of education for citizenship; - Identify the requirements and dimensions of education for democratic citizenship; - Distinguish the different models of education for citizenship, and their potential limitations; - Design and implement a program of education for citizenship in their practice; - Make informed decisions in terms of supervisory practices of education for citizenship.

1. Theoretical introduction. 1.1. Concepts of citizenship and civism: Education for citizenship and civic education; 1.2. Historical perspective of citizenship education; 1.3. Conceptions of citizenship: citizenship as status and citizenship as practice. The concept of national, cultural and cosmopolitan citizenship; 1.4. Dimensions of education for democratic citizenship. 1.5. Education for human rights and peace education. 2. Legal framework of education for citizenship 2.1.The development of education for citizenship in Portugal and Europe; 2.2. Education for citizenship in the context of the Portuguese educationnal system reform. 3. Methodological issues 3.1. The main models of education for citizenship; Definition of objectives, content, strategies and resources. 3.2. Design of programs and actions.
