Establish mass and energy balances in processes with and without chemical reaction.
Solve combined mass and energy balances in transient regime.
Syllabus MATERIAL BALANCE
1.Units Systems
2.Law of Conservation of Mass. Basis of calculation; Blocks diagrams; Composition; Flow rate; Density;Pressure
3.Processes involving gases.Ideal and real gase.
4.Processes with chemical reaction. Limiting and excess reagent; Conversion and excess percentages; Selectivity and yield; Global balance; Atoms balance
5.Processes involving recycling and purge. Recycling fraction and recycling ratio; Purge fraction
6.Processes involving vapors. Partial pressure and Vapor Pressure; Clausius-Clapeyron equation
7.Processes involving vapor-liquid equilibrium. Steaming with superheated steam

ENERGY BALANCE
8.Principle of Energy Conservation. Entalpy; Reference State; Processes involving changes in temperature; Heat capacity of solids, liquids and gases at constant pressure; Kopp and Wenner Rule
9.Processes involving phase transition. Heat of phase transition; Watson Rule; Trouton Rule.
