Learning outcomes The objective of this curricular unit is that students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of physical concepts useful in Bioengineering notably concerning optics and modern physics.

A student completing this course should be able to identify, interpret and analyze elementary physical situations involving optics and modern physics.
Syllabus 1. Optics
• Optical phenomena and the nature of light
• wave equation
• Huygens principle
• reflection and refraction
• interference and diffraction
2. Modern physics:
• thermal radiation and Planck's law for the blackbody radiation
• energy quantisation and photoelectric effect
• Compton effect
• atomic spectra
• the atomic nucleus and the radioative decay
Main Bibliography • For optics:
Physics for scientists and engineers: 6th edition: 2003 (College Text) - Serway and Jewett
• for modern physics:
