Theory of Colour and Dyeing

Code 9569
Year 1
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Ciência e Tecnologia Têxteis
Mode of delivery Face-to-face. Theoretical/Theoretical and Pratical/Lab Pratical.
Work placements Noat applicable.
Learning outcomes Fundamentals of color measurement and formulation techniques and color correction. Relationship between the fiber structure and the structure of the dyes.
Knowledge the theoretical bases of dyeing kinetics and equilibrium and infer its importance in dyeing of textile materials. The student should be able to:
-analyze, interpret and apply the concepts of color measurement, with a view to their implementation in the color reproduction in printing and dyeing;
-Understand the theoretical foundations of physical chemistry of dyes in order to be able to understand the role of all actors (fiber, dye, chemicals and auxiliaries, pH, temperature, time, etc.) in the process of dyeing of textile fibers and holding its innovation, optimization and control, with a view to quality excellence in economic and technical perspective of industrial operation.
Syllabus 1. Definition of Color. Spectrophotometric and colorimetric concepts.
2. CIE colorimetric system. Metamerism. Color differences. CIELAB system. Degree of whiteness. Light sources and illuminants.
3. Color ordering systems.
4. Color reproduction by colorimetric and spectrophotometric. Color correction. 5. Relationship between the fiber structure and the structure of the dyes.
6. Dyeing equilibrium: isotherms, affinity, electrical effects and heat of dyeing.
7. Dyeing kinetics: diffusion, velocity, kinetic equations, activation energy, equalization and compatibility.
8. Characterization of the dyeing properties of dyes.
