Profile of the programme The general objective of the study programme is to train professionals with an intermediate and international level of civil engineering, allowing the exercise of civil engineering acts as defined by the Order of Engineers, compatible with a minimum of three years' training (180 ECTS), applying theoretical, practical and experimental knowledge, framed by economic, environmental, social and ethical constraints, serving the interest of society in general and its sustainable development, having as potential stakeholders national and Portuguese-speaking countries technical staff. The degree in Civil Engineering aims to train professionals with a solid background in basic sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics and Management and Design and Topography), complemented by an intermediate and comprehensive training level in the scientific areas of Mechanics and Structures, Construction, Hydraulics and Environment, Geotechnics and Urban Planning.
Key learning outcomes Learning outcomes:
- Ability in the basic sciences related to civil engineering;
- Ability to search, study, analyse and critically interpret information;
- Ability to apply techniques and methods to solve civil engineering problems;
- Ability to communicate knowledge orally and in writing, to develop teamwork and autonomous learning;
- Ability in construction drawing, in topography and in computer tools to support the project;
- Ability in the characterization of construction materials, in the technological construction processes of buildings and in thermal and acoustic analysis of buildings;
- Ability in soil classification, in compaction control and in solving geotechnical problems;
- Ability in structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete structural elements;
- Ability in design of water distribution and drainage systems;
- Ability to design geometric solutions for roads.
Occupational profiles of graduates The profession of civil engineering is multidisciplinary and therefore it requires deep knowledge and updated in several areas. Throughout his career civil engineer can intervene in different domains in particular, building structures, bridges, dams and special structures, foundations and modeling of the land, building materials, their performance, durability, recycling and recovery technologies and construction management, environmental comfort and rehabilitation of buildings, the direction and supervision of works, supply and drainage water, sanitation and solid waste treatment, of roads, water of regional and urban planning, among others.
