The course aims to train professionals with the ability to plan, manage and optimise the sustainable operation of urban infrastructures and services, focusing on water, energy, waste, mobility and public spaces. Aligned with the mission of UBI, it promotes an interdisciplinary vision integrating sustainability, innovation and adaptation to climate change, in accordance with UN SDG 11. The curriculum combines foundations in Engineering, Environment and Urban Planning with the transformative potential of Geomatics, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. This synergy provides students with skills in critical analysis, problem-solving and decision support through innovative digital solutions. The programme prepares graduates to address the challenges of the ecological and digital transition, facilitating their integration into municipalities, infrastructure management entities, service companies, consultancy and technological innovation sectors, enabling progression to a MSc course.
By the end of the study cycle in "Smart Sustainable Cities and Communities", students will be able to:
- Comprehend and analyse, in an integrated manner, the operation of essential urban networks (water, energy, waste, transport, and mobility), ensuring their efficiency, security, and sustainability.
- Plan and manage urban systems by applying principles of circular economy, climate change adaptation, and geo-environmental risk mitigation, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Design urban monitoring systems using sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT), and process large volumes of data through advanced statistics and Artificial Intelligence to extract actionable knowledge.
- Utilise Geomatics tools and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for the modelling, visualisation, and spatial analysis of urban problems, supporting evidence-based technical decisions.
- Integrate knowledge from Engineering, Environment, Urban Planning, and Digital Technologies to diagnose operational failures and develop innovative solutions that accelerate the ecological and digital transition.
- Work in heterogeneous teams with autonomy and ethical responsibility, demonstrating technical communication skills and critical thinking regarding emerging challenges in urban management.
The Bachelor’s degree in "Intelligent Sustainable Cities and Communities" trains professionals prepared to intervene in various fields of sustainable urban management and technologies applied to smart and intelligent cities. Graduates will be qualified to work in:
- Local Authorities and Regional Administrations: planning and management of municipal infrastructure, urban mobility, and smart spatial planning.
- Urban Service Providers: operation and technical management of water supply, sanitation, waste, and energy systems.
- Technology and Innovation Companies: development and implementation of solutions based on the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, digital platforms, and Artificial Intelligence for urban monitoring.
- Sustainability and Environment Consultancy: preparation of climate change adaptation plans, urban resilience analysis, and circular economy strategies.
- Mobility and Transport: management of intelligent transport systems, traffic optimisation, and promotion of sustainable mobility solutions.
- Resource Valorisation and Circular Economy: development of solutions for the reuse, recycling, and valorisation of materials and waste.
- Geomatics and Data Analysis: use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), databases, and data science to support technical and territorial decision-making.

The programme also enables students to pursue advanced studies, particularly at Master's level.
- Geomatics & Topography Labs: Surveying and GNSS equipment, CAD, GIS, and drone operations for urban mapping.
- Hydraulics & Environment Labs: Study of the urban water cycle (supply, sanitation, and fluvial hydraulics) and environmental monitoring equipment.
- Construction & Environmental Quality Labs: Waste valorisation testing, material durability analysis, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort.
- Geotechnics & Soils Labs: Geotechnical prospection, soil behaviour, and industrial by-product valorisation in geo-environmental applications.
- Territory & Mobility Labs: Computational modelling for traffic analysis and active transport planning (pedestrian and cycling networks).
- Digital Systems & IoT Labs: Sensor applications, communication networks, Internet of Things (IoT), and database management for urban intelligence.
- Digital Resources & Support: Computer labs with specialised software for modelling and AI; Central Library.
