Profile of the programme

This PhD programm in Philosophy aims to ensure a high-level training in scientific research in this area of knowledge, particularly in the field of practical philosophy (ethics and political philosophy). In this third cycle course, doctoral students participate on a number of doctoral seminars which have the dual purpose of putting them in contact with the most significant results obtained by the leading edge research in various areas of philosophy (particularly practical philosophy) and to train them as researchers and philosophers. In addition, students also have the opportunity, over the course, to participate in seminars and conferences - actively (with presentation of papers) or passively - which involve high-caliber researchers. Doctoral students in this course will dedicate the major part of the last two years writing a PhD thesis which should be an original and high-level research work in philosophy. |
Key learning outcomes

a) Have knowledge and understanding skills in the domain of philosophy at a level corresponding to expectations on a PhD degree. b) Have the knowledge and the skills in philosophy able to form the basis for original developments and applications in a context of research. c) To apply specific knowledge obtained in the concerned field of study, as well as acquired ability to understand and resolve philosophical problems, in broader and multidisciplinar contexts. d) Be able to express implications and conclusions in a proper manner, both to specialists and to non specialists. |

Learning facilities

Central Library with a philosophy specific area. It is located in Pole I of the University, it is compound by a 5840 m2 area, with 600 study places, computers rooms, magazines and newspapers room, access to scientific magazines, printed or online. Wireless access to the web in all building. IFP library specialized in philosophy, specialy practical philosophy. It is located in the second floor of the Central Library building; it is specialized in political science, political theory, State theory, law and ethics philosophy. IFP – Institut for Practical Philosophy. It is located in the second floor of the Central Library, where it has a specialized Library and own workrooms. IFP is an investigation unit recognized and financed by FCT that obtained the very good mark in the evaluation of investigation units in 2003 and 2008. IFP is able to involve postgraduate students, namely PhD students, in ongoing investigation projects. |
