Learning outcomes The Curricular Unit (CU) Instrumentation and Measurement aims to provide students with fundamental concepts related to the science of metrology, foster the development of skills for planning and producing technical reports, delivering oral presentations, and acquiring competencies associated with experimental laboratory activities. By the end of this course, students should be able to: describe methods and techniques for assessing measurement quality; apply methods for measuring electrical quantities; understand the basic specifications of transducers used to measure the most important non-electrical quantities; identify the most relevant elements of the measurement chain; design basic measurement systems for specific applications; operate laboratory instrumentation effectively; Implement electrical circuits in a laboratory environment and analyse their performance.
Syllabus 1 – Measurement and Measurement Error
1.1 Measurement error
1.2 Measurement uncertainty
1.3 Standards and instrument calibration
2 – Measurement of Electrical Quantities
2.1 Measurement methods and instrumentation
2.2 Characterisation of electrical signals and general principles of detection
2.3 Methods for measuring current, voltage, and electrical resistance
3 – Measurement of Non-Electrical Quantities
3.1 General characteristics of transducers
3.2 Transducers for measuring non-electrical quantities

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The Assessment is accomplished, with the adjusted weighting, of the theoretical knowledge assimilated by the student, his performance in laboratory activities, his bibliographic research activities and his commitment.

Assessment methods and criteria:
Final mark = {65%TESTE} +{35%LAB}
LAB > Laboratory activities
TESTE> Exam mark or the average between the evaluation test 1 and 2.
It is necessary to obtain a minimum grade of 9,5 Val at LAB component be admitted to exam.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
