This curricular unit is designed to develop student’s knowledge about qualitative methodologies, enabling them to plan and apply a qualitative research. At the end of this curricular unit, student should be able:-To discuss the contribution of qualitative methodologies for psychological research; -To apply the main qualitative techniques of data collection; -To analyse and interpret qualitative data;- To develop a qualitative research project;- To work collaboratively;- To acquire proficiency in research and use of scientific information;- To communicate accurately research results.

Syllabus |
1. History of qualitative research and its application to psychology; Research paradigms and language: The controversy quantitative versus qualitative. Problems and advantages of qualitative methods; 2. Main strategies of qualitative research: ethnography, grounded theory, case studies; phenomenological methods. 3. Planning a qualitative research: objectives / research questions, strategies for choosing the subject, unit of study’s choice and access to contexts; ethical precautions;3. Fieldwork and documentary support: the main techniques of data collection (observation, interviews, group interviews and focus groups, life histories, narratives, documentary analysis and analysis of visual materials);4. Analysis and interpretation of qualitative data. Questions concerning the validity and fidelity; 5. Critical analysis of qualitative research.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
In the theoretical sessions, presentation of contents by the teacher, using expositive, interrogative and demonstrative methodologies followed by discussion. This presentation is, in some cases, replaced by the reading of texts previously distributed or researched by the students’ groups. In the theoretical-practical sessions, the realization of exercises to solve problems, in groups, are proposed, followed by result’s presentation and debate. The evaluation will be done through 1. written test and 2. a research project done individually or in group.
