Learning outcomes |
The aim is to develop students' knowledge of qualitative methodologies, enabling them to plan and implement qualitative research. Lectures on the main contents, possibly complemented by guided readings, are followed by group exercises and discussion in a large group.

Syllabus |
1. History of qualitative research and its application to psychology; Research paradigms and language: The controversy quantitative versus qualitative. Problems and advantages of qualitative methods; 2. Main strategies of qualitative research: ethnography, grounded theory, case studies; phenomenological methods. 3. Planning a qualitative research: objectives / research questions, strategies for choosing the subject, unit of study’s choice and access to contexts; ethical precautions;3. Fieldwork and documentary support: the main techniques of data collection (observation, interviews, group interviews and focus groups, life histories, narratives, documentary analysis and analysis of visual materials);4. Analysis and interpretation of qualitative data. Questions concerning the validity and fidelity; 5. Critical analysis of qualitative research.
