Learning outcomes |
The program aims to: - Promote historical and theoretical analysis of 21st century architecture paradigms, namely about new contexts and new models and scales, resulting from contemporary cultural, social, economic and political phenomena in constant transformation; - Rethink the sense of community, promoting new uses and operating dynamics, adapted to a specific culture; - Explore different design processes and methodologies for architectural design adapted to different cultures. At the end of the practical exercise, students should demonstrate that they were able to: - Understand and characterize the natural, urban, historical and social context of a provided location; - Understand and characterize the specificity of the morphological, orographic and topographic situation of that location; - Propose a solution appropriate to the context and the assumptions made by a promoter; - Propose a constructive characterization appropriate to the context and the program.

Syllabus |
The 1st semester of the Unit requires two practical assignments. The first corresponds to a quick diagnostic exercise, to be performed in approximately one week. The second corresponds to the response to an international competition, designated “Inspirational Hostel 2020 Competition: design a space for artists retreat, creativity and insight”. The general objective of the exercise is to confront students with an emerging situation in contemporary academic and professional practice: the need to deal with a physically inaccessible site, located anywhere on the planet, for the development of a proposal that can be simultaneously adapted to the local requirements and relevant at a global scale. Within the specific scope of the students' academic path, the exercise aims to allow an experience of formal, spatial and compositional freedom.
