The course aims to introduce and develop aspects related to the application of geographic information systems for solving spatial problems, including the domain of a computer application for production, maintenance and analysis of spatial data. a) Understanding the objectives and functionalities of geographic information systems. b) Understanding map projections and georeferencing systems. c) Understanding of spatial data bases structures. d) Understanding the main spatial data models: vector and raster. e) Mastering data acquisition, processing and spatial analysis techniques for diagnostic, planning, management and control purposes. f) Recognition of different tools for advanced spatial analysis available in GIS software and its potential in different areas of Civil Engineering.
