Learning outcomes To transmit knowledge to help the students to define the major questions of the research and elaborate the state of the art in a specific sociological sub-area, as well as, to structure an individual work plan for the two years of the doctoral thesis.

Syllabus 1. The main phases of preparation of a doctoral project.
2. Implementation and associated problems.
3. The various sub-domains of the Sociology: goals and specificities.
4. The state of the art/critical review of the literature.
5. Collecting and processing information and formalization of the research questions.
6. Doctoral plan in a subfield of Sociology.
7. PhD Planning: elements to be provided, format, supporting arguments, planning of time and resources, and preparation of the thesis defense.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria At the end of the Curricular Unit (CU) the student should be able to: identify the problems related to a PhD work in Sociology; to dominate the various research questions in their respective research subdomain; to elaborate, in detail, the state of the art of a specific subdomain of Sociology; present and defend an original intellectual proposition (idea, thesis) that supports the investigation; prepare a proposal for a thesis project with: the research question (s) and a detailed and justified plan of the activities to be carried out.
The final evaluation depends on the classification obtained in the thesis project (individual work), on a thematic chosen by the student and accepted by the teacher.
Assiduity: 50% of classes taught.
Minimum credit rating: 10 points
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
