Learning outcomes |
This course aims to develop the ability to apply the rules and techniques that lead to the preparation of scientific studies and their better communication. It is intended that the student know the different key stages of an investigation, using effectively different instruments to analyse and interpretation of data, as well as means and methods to disseminate produced results to different audiences. Upon completion, students should: - Know the methodology to be applied in scientific research practice; - Know the different types of methodologies used in clinical trials; - Know how to use bibliographic information sources for acquiring knowledge about recent progress of a particular topic; - Be able to apply tools for data quantitative analysis, mastering basic techniques of statistical analysis; - Have skills in scientific writing and structuring of different types of publication; - Know how to use information available to prepare different types of presentation directed to different audiences.

Syllabus |
- Methodology to apply in the practice of scientific research. Planning, research design, and experimentation. - Bibliographic information sources: Understanding the role of publications in science; researching and identifying relevant publications; information management techniques. - Tools for quantitative data analysis: Introduction to descriptive statistics; basic SPSS operations; data manipulation, editing, transformation; comparison of case groups; factor analysis; linear regression and correlation; exploration and crossing of variables; parametric tests; non-parametric tests. - Basic concepts of scientific writing: preparation of formal and technical reports; structuring different types of articles and their submission. - Intellectual Property Rights (Patents/Trademarks/Designs). - Introduction to clinical trials. - How to structure an oral presentation and a poster for different audiences. - How to organize scientific events and conduct a press release.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
The programmed teaching activities include lectures, theoretical classes and practical classes in which the applied pedagogical methodology is based on tutorial teaching. In this the students are guided by the professor in the use of tools for research, in the treatment, organization and transmission of information. The evaluation of the curricular unit consists in the evaluation of its two fundamental modules: A - "Rules and techniques for the preparation of scientific papers and their best communication" and B - "Tools for quantitative analysis of data". - The 1st and 2nd modules contribute respectively with 55% and 45% to the final grade: Final grade = 55% A + 45% B, Final grade for approval = 10 (0-20). - Module A evaluation includes an oral communication (20%), a poster presentation (15%), an evaluation test (15%) and the preparation of scientific news for different audiences (5 %). - Module B evaluation comprises 3 evaluation tests.
