Learning outcomes |
This course unit aims to develop in students the ability to work and research autonomously, linking the knowledge acquired in different UCs and its application in new contexts, either through the realization of an individual scientific research project or through the realization of a Dissertation or an internship in a company.
At the end of this unit the student should be able to:
- Outline an investigation strategy to address a particular problem, choosing the most appropriate tools for the purposes to be achieved and draw relevant conclusions and recommendations based on the results obtained;
- Research, analysis, organize, discuss and transmit information, orally or in writing, on a specific topic in the area of biotechnology;
- Apply the capacity for problem solving and mathematical and critical thinking in the analysis of new problems, proposal of solutions and decision making;
- Work according to ethical principles.

Syllabus |
The syllabus contents of this Course are defined between the supervisor and the student according to the established work plan, under the coordination of the Course Director and the Course Commission for the 2nd cycle of Biotechnology. It is intended that the proposed theme in the area of Biotechnology, of a fundamental or applied nature, developed at the University and / or in partnership with companies or public and private research centers allows the development of initiative, autonomy and multidisciplinary skills in the students under the guidance of a professor.
Following the work developed, preparation and oral presentation of a dissertation, research project or an internship report, according to the rules established for the granting of a Master's degree in Biotechnology.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
The work of dissertation, projects or internship are supervised by a PhD professor. Supervision can be provided in co-orientation, either by national supervisors, either by national and foreigners, being always one of them from UBI.
At the end of this course unit, a thesis dissertation will be written and will be presented in a public examination, according to the UBI Master's Degree Regulation, and will be evaluated by the members of the Jury in accordance with the rules and weights defined by the Biotechnology Course Commission of 2nd cycle. The evaluation will take into account the scientific / technical content of the work done, the quality of the public presentation made by the student and the student's performance during the public defence of the thesis.
