Learning outcomes Develop fundamental knowledge in chemistry.
Understanding atomic models. Use the Periodic Table as a tool in understanding the chemistry of the elements.
Understanding the theories of chemical bonding and determine the geometry of the molecules.
Relate the physical properties of substances with intermolecular forces.
Solve problems with gases and know how use the ideal gas law and Dalton's law.
Classify solids according to the chemical bond and its crystal structure.
Using the crystal field theory to predict the structure and properties of transition metal complexes.
Understand the laws of thermodynamics and its application in chemistry.
Determine the reaction rate and its dependence on concentration, time and temperature. Establish the law rate
for a chemical reaction.
Syllabus M1 Atomic theory. Schrodinger equation. Hydrogen atom and polyelectronic atoms. Periodic Table.
M2 Chemical Bonding. Theories of chemical bonding. Physical properties of substances and intermolecular
forces.
M3 Gas laws. Partial pressures. Deviations from ideal behavior.
M4 Solid-state chemistry: solid classification depending on bound, structure and properties.
M5 Coordination Chemistry: Crystal Field Theory, structure and properties of the complexes.
M6 Thermochemistry: Energy. First law of thermodynamics. Heat of reaction. Hess's law. Born-Haber cycle.
Spontaneous processes: introduction to the concept of entropy and second law of thermodynamics.
M7 Introduction to Chemical Kinetics: Rate of reaction. Reaction order. Arrhenius Law
Laboratory
Preparation of Solutions. Determination of solutions density by the pycnometer method. Preparation of
coordination compounds. Determination of the enthalpy of a reaction. Resolution of problems.
