Mode of delivery Face-to-face
Learning outcomes The course aims to introduce students to different algorithms and computational techniques used in modern bioinformatics and to their application in solving problems in biology and medicine, with emphasis on applications of molecular biology.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Know the most important biological databaeses and collect information from these databases.
- Know how to parameterize adequately the most common search and sequence alignment algorithms.
- Understand the motivations, assumptions and limitations of computational techniques that are applied to solve problems in biology.
- Identify research directions in Bioinformatics.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment of the teaching-learning period consists of 2 tests (completed individually), 3 practical assessments (carried out in groups of 2 students) and 2 challenges (individual).

Theoretical and practical knowledge test (T1 and T2) – 12 (6+6) points

Practical assessment, carried out in practical classes (in groups of 2 students) through:
3 practical assessments (P1,P2,P3) – 6 (2+2+2) points
2 challenges (D1 and D2) – 2 (1+1) points
Minimum attendance of 50%.

Final grade = 0.1xP1+0.1xP2+0.1xP3+0.05*D1+0.05*D2+0.3*T1+0.3*T2

The student obtains the classification of Approved/exempted from the exam if he/she obtains a final grade equal to or higher than 9.5 points.

Or
Admitted to exam, if:
50%* attendance of practical classes;
Final grade of the academic term equal to or higher than 6.

Exam (60%) + 40% (relating to practical assessments and challenges already completed)
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
