Call students' attention to the theoretical foundations of the economics of culture and the empirical analysis of cultural and creative activities, to draw attention to the specifics of these activities, to the importance of culture in economic analysis (GDP, GVA, employment) and to public action mainly in the field of cultural policies in an open and interdisciplinary perspective. Provide knowledge about the scientific foundations of sociology of culture and cultural production. Provide tools which enable students to discuss the effects of economic and political power relations in the aesthetic valorization of artistic products in central and peripheral contexts. At the end of this course, students should be able to assess the economic importance of cultural activities and creative industries, and the social importance of these activities for economies through their impact on employment. The analysis will focus on the Portuguese, EU and OECD realities, and on peripheral contexts
