This UC has the objective of presenting the fundamentals of rheology and fluid mechanics of blood in the cardiovascular system, with view for the student to pursue further investigation on the occurrence and localization of vascular atherosclerotic disease
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
-describe the human circulatory system
- describe the relation between local fluid mechanics and some vascular diseases like atherosclerosis;
- understand the concept of viscosity, its measurement and related rheological models;
- distinguish between Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids;
- understand the essential points of blood rheology;
- analyze simple flows in circular vessels;
- calculate or evaluate flow properties such as: flow rate, average velocity, wall shear stress, Reynolds number, pressure losses.
