Learning outcomes This course works with two distinct modes: the students may either do a project for their master thesis or for the internship.
In the first case, the aim of the course is to provide students with skills in scientific research methodologies and contribute to their preparation for a scientific or academic career in computer science and engineering. At the end of the course the student should be able to identify the research methodology to be used in his/her research and to prepare a survey on the state of the art in a given topic of computer science and engineering and to prepare the project for the master's dissertation.
In the case of the internship, the course will focus on transmitting competences adequate for the job market. At the end, the student should be able to characterize a company and its place of internship and elaborate the internship project, where it describes the problem and the approach to solve it.
Syllabus Dissertation project: Academic integrity, codes of ethics and plagiarism. Introduction to scientific research. Methods of scientific investigation. The choice of a scientific research problem. The choice of an advisor. The art of literature review. Writing of scientific articles and technical reports. Oral presentation of articles and reports.
Internship project: Ethics in the job market. Integration in work teams. Critical spirit and sense of autonomy. Proactivity and creativity. Persistence and solidarity. Leadership and communication skills.
Main Bibliography Scientific articles according to the object of study, made available by the online knowledge library (B-On) subscribed by the Documentation Services - Library of the University of Beira Interior. Articles and online documents made available by the instructor or by the supervisor.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Dissertation or internship project is prepared under the guidance of a professor of the Department who will meet with the student as often as appropriate in coordination with the instructor responsible for the curricular units.
The evaluation of the dissertation or internship project is done through public defense before a jury constituted by the advisor, the president and an opponent, appointed by the Scientific Committee of Course.
