Learning outcomes To provide advanced training in durability of materials, being a specialization for the development of research studies in this area and for the project of the durability of structures, buildings and bituminous pavement, in civil engineering.
a) Mastery of an experimental investigation of durability of materials;
b) Mastery of concepts of deterioration of natural stones in buildings;
c) Mastery of deterioration of mortars and ceramics;
d) Mastery of durability of asphalt pavements and durability of materials incorporating recycled wastes; e) Mastery of concept of deterioration of wood;
f) Mastery of mechanisms of durability of concrete and of the concrete durability prescriptive project; g) Understanding of the project for durability based on performance models.
Syllabus 1. Topics on performance and durability of materials;
2. Action of the environment on materials;
3. Concrete durability; Mechanisms of fluid transport in concrete;
4. Corrosion of metals and steel reinforcement, Corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures;
5. Deterioration of wood; Effect of the environment, biological degradation, and effect of pollutants and fire action;
6. Deterioration of natural stone; assessment of durability tests, monuments and buildings, deterioration mechanisms and effects of the environment;
7. Durability of mortars, ceramics and glass; Causes and decay processes; assessment tests;
8. Durability of asphalt pavements; Effect of water in asphalt pavements;
9. Durability of materials produced incorporating waste materials;
10. Prescriptive design for durability of construction materials;
11. Durability project based on performance models.
