Strength of Materials I

Code 14650
Year 2
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(45H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Mechanics and Structures
Entry requirements Statics and Continuous Solid Mechanics.
Learning outcomes The curricular unit has the aim to provide training in the following domains:
- mechanical properties of materials;
- characteristics and geometrical properties of cross-sections;
- calculation of stresses due to the four internal forces in linear members;
- criteria for yielding and failure for ductile materials;
- verification of safety for the resistance limit state;
- energetic theorems.

Students should develop the following competences:
a) to design linear members under axial force in iso/hiperstatics structures;
b) to calculate the geometrical properties of cross-sections;
c) to design and verify the safety of beams under bending, shear and torsion;
d) to calculate displacements on trusses;
e) to calculate the equivalent stress according to yielding criteria.
Syllabus 1 - Introduction to Strength of Materials;
2 - Linear members under axial force;
3 - Geometrical properties of cross-sections;
4 - Energetic methods;
5 - Linear members under torsion;
6 - Linear members under bending moment and shear.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is structured with theoretical classes – T (exposition of the subjects and presentation of examples) and practical classes – PL (application of theoretical concepts to solve problems).

The evaluation is performed in two stages:

- Continuous evaluation (AC):
The Continuous Evaluation (AC) is based on the mandatory completion of: i) practical works (TP), ii) a global theoretical-practical test (testTP) without consultation. The TP will be provided throughout the semester with delivery dates to be defined by the teacher.
The AC final grade (up to a max. 20 points) will be calculated as follows: AC = 0.2 TP + 0.8 testTP

- Exam:
Global theoretical-practical exam without consultation, with a maximum grade equal to 20 points.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
