Strength of Materials II

Code 14654
Year 3
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Mechanics and Structures
Entry requirements Statics and Continuous Solid Mechanics.
Learning outcomes The curricular unit has the aim to provide training in the following domains:
- Interaction between internal forces;
- Biaxial bending with axial force;
- Deformation of beams in pure and simple bending;
- Stability of columns;
- Hiperstatics beams;
- Models for non-elastic materials; plastic bending of beams.

Students should develop the following competences:
a) to calculate reference stresses in cross-sections under combined internal forces;
b) to calculate normal stresses in cross-sections with eccentric axial loads and draw the central core;
c) to calculate displacements in beam´s structures and design cross-sections through the stiffness criterion;
d) to check the safety on linear members under buckling;
e) to calculate internal forces in hiperstatic beams;
f) to calculate the plastic moment and the collapse load of beams.
Syllabus 1 - Linear members under combined internal forces (M+V+T or N+T);
2 - Linear members under axial force and bending momento (N+M);
3 - Deformation of beam under bending (M or M+V);
4 - Stability of columns;
5 - Statically indeterminate beams;
6 - Elasto-plastic bending of beams.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is structured with theoretical classes – T (exposition of the subjects and presentation of examples) and practical classes – PL (application of theoretical concepts to solve problems).

The evaluation is performed in two stages:

- Continuous evaluation (AC):
The Continuous Evaluation (AC) is based on the mandatory completion of practical works (TP) and a theoretical-practical test (testTP) without consultation. The TP will be provided throughout the semester with delivery dates to be defined by the teacher. The testTP will be performed on 12/12/2023 (Class PL).
The AC final grade (up to a max. 20 points) will be calculated as follows: AC = 0.2 TP + 0.8 testTP

- Exam:
Global theoretical-practical exam without consultation, with a maximum grade equal to 20 points.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
