Learning outcomes This curricular unit aims to provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals and techniques of rhetorical art and to develop their rhetorical skills.
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
i) Characterize classical rhetoric and its techniques;
ii) Analyze the rhetoric of new media;
iii) Demonstrate rhetorical competence in the various facets of public discourse.
Syllabus 1. The historical development of rhetoric.
1.1. Greek democracy and the genesis of rhetoric; rhetoric and citizenship.
1.2. Classical theorization of the discipline: the different types of rhetoric and their respective techniques. Analysis of some examples.
1.3. Platonic criticism of rhetoric as a paradigm.
1.4. The rebirth of rhetoric in the second half of the 20th century: the “new rhetoric”.
2. Rhetoric in mediated societies.
2.1. From face-to-face rhetoric to mediated rhetoric. Analysis of some examples.
2.2. Rhetoric and the persuasion industries.
2.3. Image rhetoric.
2.4. Rhetoric and technology.
2.5. Rhetoric and digital influencers.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching methodology will include the following activities: specific explanations by the teacher (more theoretical content); reading and commenting on texts; group work in the classroom; tutorial sessions with each student; presentation and discussion of work prepared by students in and outside of class.
