To describe theories, models and cognitive constructs to explain how mind is functioning To understand the importance of cognitive psychology to the other areas of psychological knowledge To acquire information on the fundamentals of attention and perceptual mechanisms functioning To Integrate and to apply knowledge, explaining real-life issues with physical and psychophysical laws, and theories of perception and attention To discuss the relationship of attention and perception with other psychological processes To analyse documentaries, articles and books about cognitive psychology, attention and perception To communicate in a clear and structured way, in speech and writing in Portuguese To synthesize content from documents in a foreign language To make work resulting from a proper organization of group work and planning time To use laboratory resources, computer software and the platform "Moodle To demonstrate ability to problem-solving.

Syllabus |
Introduction to cognitive psychology. Attention: functions and definition, characteristics and manifestations. Types of attention and experimental study of attention. Perception. Definition and factors influencing perception. Visual perception: methodology and scientific foundations of vision science: contributions from physics, optics and biology – concepts related with perceptual phenomena; Perception of color; Shape perception; Perception of depth, size and distance. Perception of the chemical senses. Somatic perception, tactile and haptic. Perceptual changes.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
Teaching-learning activities: Identification and clarification of previous knowledge. Systematization of theoretical content, using the expositive method. Content analysis based on materials, documents written and audiovisual. Summary of content through collaborative techniques. Practical activities in the laboratory and in field work. Development of research on databases. Achievement of individual and group work.
Evaluation methodologies: Participation in the activity of teaching and learning. Development of a portfolio of group work, practice and theoretical, conducted in time of contact and individual work time. Preparation and presentation of an individual work about a concept or theme of UC, pursued through any form of expression, with the exception of the format of written work. Presentation of group work and individual work. Evaluation tests.
