Learning outcomes This Curricular Unit aims to provide students with basic knowledge in Biochemistry that will allow them to understand the molecular logic of life.

At the end of this course unit the student should be able to:
-Identify the general principles and terminology of Biochemistry;
-Recognize and describe the structure and properties of biomolecules;
-Relate the structure and properties of biomolecules with their biological function;
-Identify and describe the basic principles of enzymology and enzymatic mechanisms;
-Apply the knowledge acquired in the interpretation and resolution of problems in the field of Biochemistry;
-Execute experimental techniques in the field of Biochemistry and analyze and interpret the results with scientific rigor and critical spirit.
Syllabus 1 INTRODUCTION TO BIOCHEMISTRY. Origin of biomolecules. The water molecule (properties and buffer solutions).
2 PROTEINS. Structure and properties of amino acids. Stereochemistry and acid-base properties. Hierarchy and structural classification of proteins. Relationship between structure and function. Allosteric proteins: hemoglobin. Protein purification and characterization. Enzyme properties.
3-GLUCOSE. General structure and properties. Stereoisomerism, mutation and forms
anomeric.
4. LIPIDS. Classification, structure and properties.
5. NUCLEIC ACIDS. Structure, properties and function.
6. VITAMINS AND COENZIMES. General characteristics of water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins.

7-PRACTICAL PROGRAM
Preparation of buffer solutions.
Potentiometric titration of amino acids.
Determination of the concentration of a protein using the Bradford Method.
Study of the kinetics of sucrose hydrolysis by the invertase enzyme.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The UC is divided into theoretical-practical classes and laboratory classes. The methodology of the theoretical classes consists of the presentation of concepts by the teacher and the students. For each theoretical-practical class, the students have, as task the preparation of the topics to be addressed, and in the course of the same are chosen to present some related concepts on the topic under discussion. The practical classes allow the consolidation of concepts taught in theoretical classes. For each laboratory class, the student prepares a report on the procedures, results and conclusions of the experiments carried out. The evaluation of the curricular unit consists of a test of knowledge evaluation and oral presentation of the work done by the students.
