Environmental Chemistry

Code 14951
Year 3
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Chemistry
Entry requirements None
Learning outcomes Presentation and mastery of technologies applicable to liquid, soil and gas remediation.
As specific goals are pointed out the following:
1 - To identify and monitor the main operational parameters
2 - To describe the main technologies applied in effluent treatment
3 – Promote reuse opportunities
Before the completion of this course students should be able to understand the fundamentals of biological, chemical and physical aspects applied on monitoring and treatment of water, wastewater and solid waste. Specifically they should describe fundamental principles of wastewater treatment processes and solve problems related with monitoring and treatment processes.
Syllabus Environmental Quality. Prevention of pollution. Water pollution: water quality control and water purification. Physical-chemistry and biological processes. Physical units: grit chambers, equalization basins, primary sedimentation tanks and dissolved air flotation. Chemical units: coagulation/flocculation. Biological methods to treat liquid effluents: aerobic and anaerobic systems. Polishing technologies: bio-sorption, disinfection and membranes technologies. Recycling and saving resources. Alternative technologies for industrial wastewater treatment. Solid waste: strategies of monitoring and management. Basic processes on solids treatment: mechanical and biological treatment. Composting. Pyrotechnology. Sanitary landfields. Gaseous pollutants: monitoring and control of particulate pollutants and gases. Sustainable sources of energy: biofuels. Economical and environmental impact of pollutants: national and European regulations.
