Learning outcomes The objective of this UC is to teach the fundamentals of Applied Thermodynamics so that the student may gain an understanding and proficiency on thermodynamics with view to solve practical problems of thermal engineering as may be encountered by a aeronautical engineer.

At the end of the course the student should be able to:
- understand the basic thermodynamics concepts;
- analyze simple processes by applying the 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics.
- utilize the water vapor tables and the equations of state for ideal gases.
- perform energy balances to power (vapor and gas turbine) and calculate performance parameters.
- understand the principles of combustion and know how to do an energy balance to reacting systems.
- analyze simple thermodynamics systems, including reactive systems.
Syllabus 1. Basic notions of thermodynamics.
2. First law for closed systems.
3. Second law. Entropy.
4. Thermodynamics relations. Ideal gas and incompressible fluid.
5. First law for open systems.
6. Vapour power cycles.
7. Gas turbine cycles.
8. Combustion
