Learning outcomes At the end of the course, students should be able to:
A. use basic concepts and terminology related to the functioning of the human organism;
B. relate the functioning of the human body to principles of physics;
C. identify and characterise relevant technologies in medicine, particularly in the area of medical imaging;
D. identify the role of diagnostic and prediction algorithms in medicine;
E. research, analyse and communicate relevant and up-to-date scientific information in the field of biomedicine;
F. interpret the functioning and organisation of the health system in Portugal;
G. identify the role of the different professionals who work in health institutions by contacting them directly;
H. identify the attitudes and values appropriate to the medical profession;
I. work as part of a team, communicate and interact with colleagues and tutors;
J. demonstrate professional attitudes.
Syllabus The general aim of this CU is to enable students to acquire a set of basic knowledge and handle a set of
transversal tools necessary for learning different subjects throughout the course of Medicine.
The programme contents are as follows:
1. medical terminology
2. Concepts of anatomy and physiology, anatomical designations, planes, regions, anatomical position and clinics. Concept of homeostasis
3. Physical principles applied to biology and medicine: electricity, fluids, sound, light, optics and modern physics
4. Diagnostic technologies relevant to medicine. Basics of medical imaging.
5. Digital Health
6. Scientific method; Scientific information: research, organisation and dissemination
7. Health System, Health Policies and National Health Plans. Organisation of the health system in Portugal and resources
human. Efficiency, effectiveness and quality
8. Identity and values of the medical profession
